Phosphine is used in making Holme.s signals. Containers containing calcium carbide [`CaC_2`] and calcium phosphide [`Ca_3P_2`] are pierced and thrown in the sea when the gases evolved burn and serve as a signal.
It is used in preparation of smoke screen.
