What happens when
chlorobenzene is subjected to hydrolysis,

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Chlorobenzene will not undergo hydrolysis readily due to partial double bond Character of C - Cl bond because of resonance. However, it can be hydrolysed to phenol under extreme Conditions of 623 K and 300 atm pressure. The hydrolysis becomes easy if any electron withdrawing group is present at o - or p - positions.
