A solid is made of two elements X and Y....

A solid is made of two elements X and Y. Atoms X are in fcc arrangement and Y atoms occupy all the octahedral sites and alternate tetrahedral sites. What is the formula of compound ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Atoms of X forming fcc lattice means they occurs 8 corners and 6 face centres hence number of atoms =4
Tetrahedral sites =8 Number of Y atoms =4
Octahedral sites =4 Number of Y atoms =4
`therefore` Total number of Y atoms =8
`therefore` X :Y
4:8 or 1:2 . Hence formula of compound is `XY_2`.
