Methanol and ethanol are liquids of simi...

Methanol and ethanol are liquids of similar nature, but a mixture of them is a non-ideal solution. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both methanol and ethanol are individually associate liquids, due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Upon mixing these alcohols, a homogeneous solution is formed. In the solution also intermolecular hydrogen bonds are present, but compared to those present in the components is less. Hence, the mixture shows positive deviation from Raoult.s law.

Assertion: If two liquids on mixing form a solution with liberation of heat, it is a non ideal solution with negative deviation. Reason: Solutions with negative deviation are accompanied by decrease in volume.

If liquid A and B form ideal solutions

Make a list of solids, liquids and gases from your surroundings. (These substance may be orgnic or chemical). Separate mixtures from them and clasify them into solutions, colloids and suspensions.

The vapour pressure of a pure liquid 'A' is 60mm, at 25^@C . It forms an ideal solution with another liquid 'B'. The mole fraction of 'B' is 0.6 and the total Pressure is 64mm. Then the vapour pressure of 'B' at 25^@C is
