Water on a clean glass surface tends to spread out while mercury on the same surface tends to form drops . (Put differently, water wets glass while mercury does not .)

Text Solution

Water on a clean glass surface tends to spread out . Water wets glass because force of cohesion of water is much less than the force of adhesion due to glass .Hence water spread out on glass or stick to surface of glass.
In case of mercury force of cohesion due to mercury molecules is quite strong as compared to adhesion force due to glass .
Consequently , mercury does not wet glass and tends to form drops.

Give reason why mercury does not wet glass .

If two glass plates have water between them and are separated by very small distance (see figure). It is very difficult to pull them apart. It is because the water in between forms cylindrical surface on the side that gives rise ot lower pressure in the water in comparison to atmosphere. If the radius of the cylindrical surface is R and surface tension of water is T then the pressure in water between the plates is lowr by:

A glass capillary tube is of the shape of a truncated cone with an apex angle alpha so that its two ends have cross sections of different radii. When dipped in water vertically, water rises in it to a high h, where the radius of its cross section is b.
