Iceberg floats in water with part of it ...

Iceberg floats in water with part of it submerged .What is the fraction of the volume of inceberg submerged if the density of ice is `rho_(i)=0.917g//cm^(3)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Density of ice `rho_(ice)=0.17g//cm^(3)`
Density of water `rho_(w)=1g//cm^(3)`
Let volume of iceberg =V
Let volume of water displaced by iceberg =.V.
For body floats on liquid,
Weight of iceberg = weight of water displaced by the submerged part by ice
`thereforeVrho_(i)thetag=Vrho_(w)g`
`therefore(V)/(V)=(rho_(ice))/(rho_(w))=(0.917)/(1)=0.917`
