Explain why,
an optical pyrometer (for measuring high temperatures) calibrated for an ideal black body radiation gives too low a value for the temperature of a red hot iron piece in the open, but gives a correct value for the temperature when the same piece is in the temperature when the same piece is in the furnace.

Optical pyrometer is developed on the principle of lightening of surface depends on temperature.
When the temperature is less than `600^(@)C` (iron piece is in open) then it is not bright, hence temperature in optical pyrometer is low. But when that piece is kept in furnace, then it is bright and optical pyrometer gives correct value of temperature.

A steel rular exactly 20 cm long is graduated to give correct measurements at 20^@C . (a) Will it give readings that are too long or too short at lower temperatures? Radiation from a black body at the thermodynamic temperature T_(1) is measured by a small detector at distance d_(1) from it. When the temperature is increased to T_(2) and the distance to d_(2) , the power received by the detector is unchanged. What is the ratio d_(2)//d_(1) ?

The efficiency of a heat engine is defined as the ratio of the mechanical work done by the engine in one cycle to the heat absorbed from the high temperature source . eta = (W)/(Q_(1)) = (Q_(1) - Q_(2))/(Q_(1)) Cornot devised an ideal engine which is based on a reversible cycle of four operations in succession: isothermal expansion , adiabatic expansion. isothermal compression and adiabatic compression. For carnot cycle (Q_(1))/(T_(1)) = (Q_(2))/(T_(2)) . Thus eta = (Q_(1) - Q_(2))/(Q_(1)) = (T_(1) - T_(2))/(T_(1)) According to carnot theorem "No irreversible engine can have efficiency greater than carnot reversible engine working between same hot and cold reservoirs". A carnot engine whose low temperature reservoir is at 7^(@)C has an efficiency of 50% . It is desired to increase the efficiency to 70% . By how many degrees should the temperature of the high temperature reservoir be increased?

In a vernier callipers the main scale and the vernier scale are made up different materials. When the room temperature increases by DeltaT^(@)C , it is found the reading of the instrument remains the same. Earlier it was observed that the front edge of the wooden rod placed for measurement crossed the N^(th) main scale division and N + 2 MSD coincided with the 2nd VSD. Initially, 10 VSD coincided with 9MSD. If coefficient of linear expansion of the main scale is alpha_(1) and that of the vernier scale is alpha_(2) then what is the value of alpha_(1)//alpha_(2) ? (Ignore the expansion of the rod on heating)
