What is dimension of a physical quantity ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Any physical quantity can be represented by using dimension.
Any physical quantity can be represented as combination of 7 base (fundamental) quantity.
Its symbol are as follows:
Mass : M
Length: L
Time : T
Electric current: A
Thermodynamics temperature : K
Luminous Intensity : cd
Quantity of matter : mol
Dimension : Power or exponent to which base quantity is reaised to is called dimension of that quantity :
`=mxxmxx m`
`=m^(3)`
`beta`
In volume dimension of length is 3 wheres as dimension of mass and time is zero.
Example : Force =F=ma
`="maxx" xx "acceleration"`
`=M^(1)xxL^(1)T^(-2)`
`=M^(1)L^(1)xxT^(-2)`
`:.` In force, dimension of mass, length and time is 1,1, and -2 respectively.
