The two metallic contact of the junction is called semiconductor diode. It has two electrical terminal so it it called p-n junction diode. This is shown in figure (a).

The symbol for p-n junction in circuit is shown in figure (b).
The direction of arrow indicates the conventional direction of current (when the diode is under forward bias).
The equilibrium barrier potential can be altered by applying an external voltage V across the diode.
