The certain number of chromosomes is maintained in living organisms possessing sexual reproduction by meiosis from generation to generation. During the process number of chromosomes becomes half. Generally due to fusion of male and female gametes it is restored in next generation. Meiosis represents genetic variations from one generation to other generation.
