The ionisation enthalpy of sulphur is "1...

The ionisation enthalpy of sulphur is `"1014kJmol"^(-1)`. If its electronegativity is 2.4, what is its electron gain enthalpy?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the Mulliken scale, electronegativity (E.N.) is given in terms of ionisation enthalpy `(I_(1))` and electron gain enthalpy `(E_(1))` as, `E.N. = (I_(1) +E_(1))//544`
substituting the values, `2.4=(1014+E_(1))//544,E_(1)=544xx2.4-1014=290`
Electron gain enthalpy of sulphur `=-"290 kJ mol"^(-1)`
