(i) Why does the sun appear reddish at sun-set or sun- rise ?
(ii) For which colour the refractive index of prism material is maximum and minimum ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) At sun-set or sum-rise, the sun's rays have to pass through a larger distance in the atmosphere Most of the blue and other shorter wavelength are removed by scattering. The least scattered light reaching our eyes , therefore, the sun looks reddish.
(ii) Refractive index of prism material is
(a) maximum for violet colour and
(b) minimum for red colour.
