Why do gametes are produced in large numbers in organisms exhibit external fertilization ?

Organisms exhibiting external fertilisation release a large number of gametes into the surrounding medium (water) in order to enhance the chances of syngamy because there are few chances of fusion between male and femal gametes. E.g. bony fishes and frog.
