Methanogenic bacteria are found in rumen of cattle, gobar gas plant and bottom of waterlogged paddy fields. They are not found in the activated sludge. During secondary treatment of waste water, it is in the digester where other kinds of bacteria which grow anaerobically, digest the bacteria and the fungi in the sludge producing mixture of gases such as, methane, hydrogen sulphide, and `CO_2` which forms the biogas.
