Compound X is ethylbenzene,`C_(6)H_(5)C_(2)H_(5)`. The reaction is called Friedel-Crafts ethylation. Y is acetophenone, `C_(6)H_(5)COCH_(3)`. Oxidation of ethyl benzene at 400 K in the presence of maganese acetate catalyst gives acetophenone. Z is benzoic acid, `C_(6)H_(5)COOH`. Aromatic ketones give carboxylic acids in the presence of powerful oxidants.
