Figure show the stress-strain curve for ...

Figure show the stress-strain curve for a given material. What are (a) Young's modulus and (b) approximate yield strength of the material?

Text Solution

a) From the graph, corresponding to point P, Stress = `150xx10^6N//m^2`, Strain = `0.002 = 2xx10^(-3)`
Young.s modulus, Y = stress / strain
` = (150 xx 10^6)/(2 xx 10^(-3))`
` = 7.5 xx 10^10 N//m^2`
b) From graph, corresponding to point B (yield point), stress ` = 300 xx 10^6N//m^2`. Thus, approximate yield strength = `2xx10^8 N//m^2`
