A 3 cm long copper wire is stretched to increase its length by 0.3 cm. find the lateral strain in the wire, if the Poisson.s ratio for copper is 0.26.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

L = 3cm, `Delta L = 0.3cm, sigma = 0.26`.
Longitudinal strain `(DeltaL)/(L) = (0.3)/(3) = 0.1`
`sigma ` = Lateral Strain / Longitudinal Strain
The Lateral Strain ` = sigma xx ` Longitudinal Strain
`= 0.26 xx 0.1 = 0.026`
