Why many lines are observed in the hydrogen emission spectrum ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrogen atom has many states.
The lowest energy state is `n = 1`.
The highest energy state is `n= alpha`.
During emission electrons of some .H. atoms come directly to `n=1`, other atoms go to intermediate states and finally to `n=1`, giving many spectral lines.
