Why is the transition from n=3 to n=1 gives a spectral triplet

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The shell with n=3 is M shell. It has 3 sub shells. During emission form M shell to the ground state, three different photons of almost similar energy are given out. Therefore, the transition is with 3 fine lines, called a triplet.
