We can calculate the compression , but not the time over which the compression occurs . A solution of Newton.s second law `F = (dp)/(dt)` for this system is required for temporal information .
(2) Not all forces are conservative ,Friction for example is a non - conservative force . the principle of conservation of energy will have to be modified in this case .
We have to show dissipated energy due to friction forces ,

Where Q is the dissipated heat energy .
(3) The zero of the potential energy is arbitrary.
For the spring force , potential energy is zero at x = 0 . For the constant gravitational force mg , V=0 is taken at the earth.s surface . For the force due to the universal law of gravitational source .(One cannot change horses in midstream ).
Hence , the reason for taking the zero value of potential energy at different position is that the absolute value of potential energy is not important but the change in potential energy is important and as in practices change in potential energy is taken into action .
