Comets move around the sun in highly elliptical orbits . The gravitational force on the comet due to the sun is not normal to the comet's velocity in general. yet the work done by the gravitational force over energy complete orbit of the comet is zero . Why ?

Text Solution

Both the earth and the moon are subject to the gravitational force of the sun. As observed from the sun, the orbit of the moon'

A rain drop of radius 2 mm falls from a height of 500 m above the ground .It falls with decreasing acceleration (due to viscous resistance of the air) until at half its original height , it attains its maximum (terminal) speed, and moves with uniform speed thereafter .What is the work done by the gravitational force on the drop in the first and second half of its journey ?What is the work done by the resistive force in the entire journey if its speed on reaching the ground is 1 ms^(-1) ?

Statement-1:When a planet approches the point which is farthest from the sun, its orbital speed decreases. Statement-2: Work done on the planet by the gravitational force exerted by the sun is negative.

A comet orbits the sun in a highly elliptical orbit. Does the comet have a constant (a) linear speed, (b) angular speed, (c) angular momentum, (d) kinetic energy, (e) potential energy, (f) total energy throughout its orbit? Neglect any mass loss of the comet when it comes very close to the Sun.

A star like the sun has several bodies moving around it at different distances. Consider that all of them are moving in circular orbits. Letr be the distance of the body from the centre of the star and let its linear velocity be v, angular velocity , omega kinetic energy K, gravitational potential energy U, total energy E and angular momentum I. As the radius r of the orbit increases, determine which of the above quantities increase and which ones decrease. As shown in figure, where a body of mass m is revolving around a star of mass M. Linear velocity of the body,
