Why alkyl halides, though polar, are immiscible with water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In water `H_(2)O` molucules are bonded together by H-bond. Although alkylhalide also contain polar C-X bands, they cannot break the H-bond in `H_(2)O` molecule. Therefore they exist as seprate layers and are immiscible with each other.
