Glycogen is called animal starch because its structure is similar to that of amylopectin, the main difference between glycogen and amylopectin is that amylopectin chains consists of about 20 - 25 glucose units but glycogen charins are much shorter and consists of about 10 - 14 glucose units, i.e., glycogenis highly brached.
