When a steel pipe is hammered at one end...

When a steel pipe is hammered at one end, we hear two sounds at another end. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Because here one sound propagates in the solid medium of wall of pipe and another aound propagates in the air medium in the holow part of pipe with different speeds. Hence, we can hear them separately.

Two narrow cylindrical pipes A and B have the same length. Pipe A is open at both ends and is filled with a monoatomic gas of molar mass M_(A) . Pipe B is open at one end and closed at the other end, and is filled with a diatomic gas of molar mass M_(B) . Both gases are at the same temperature. (a) If the frequency of the second harmonic of the fundamental mode in pipe A is equal to the frequency of the third harmonic of the fundamental mode in pipe B , determine the value of M_(B)//M_(B) . (b) Now the open end of pipe B is also closed (so that the pipe is closed at both ends). Find the ratio of the fundamental frequency in pipe A to that in pipe B .

A rectangular pipe having cross-sectional area A is closed at one end and at its other end a block having same cross-section is placed so that the system is airtight. In the equilibrium position of the block, the pressure and volume of air enclosed in the pipe and P and V respectively. Prove that the block performs SHM when it is given a small displacement 'x' inward and released. Also find the period of this SHM. Assume the walls to be frictionless and compression of air to be isothermal.
