A wheel is rotating with a speed of `500` rpm on a shaft. Second identical wheel, initially at rest is suddenly coupled on the same shaft. What is the speed of the resultant combination ? Assume that the moment of inertia of the shaft is negligible.

`I_(1)omega_(1)=I_(2)omega_(2)` `I_(1)n_(1)=I_(2)n_(2)`
`I_(1)(500)=2I_(1)n_(2)` `:.n_(2)=250` rpm

Two discs of moments of inertia I_(1) and I_(2) about their respective axes (normal to the disc and passing through the centre), and rotating with angular speeds ω_(1) and ω_(2) are brought into contact face to face with their axes of rotation coincident. (a) What is the angular speed of the two-disc system? (b) Show that the kinetic energy of the combined system is less than the sum of the initial kinetic energies of the two discs. How do you account for this loss in energy? Take omega_(1)neomega_(2)

A large steel wheel is to be fitted on to a shaft of the same material. At 27 ^(@) C , the outer diameter of the shaft is 8.70 cm and the diameter of the central hole in the wheel is 8.69 cm. The shaft is cooled using dry Icel. At what temperature of the shaft does the wheel slip on the shaft? Assume coefficient of linear expansion of the steel to be constant over the required temperature range: alpha_("steel ") = 1.20 xx 10^(-5) K^(-1) .

(a) A child stands at the centre of a turntable with his two arms outstretched. The turntable is set rotating with an angular speed of 40 rev/min. How much is the angular speed of the child if he folds his hands back and thereby reduces his moment of inertia to 2/5 times the initial value ? Assume that the turntable rotates without friction. (b) Show that the child’s new kinetic energy of rotation is more than the initial kinetic energy of rotation. How do you account for this increase in kinetic energy?

A 100 turn closely wound circular coil of radius 10 cm carries a current of 3.2.A. (a) What is the field at the centre of the coil ? (b) What is the magnetic moment of this coil ? The coil is placed in vertical plane and is free to rotate about a horizontal axis which coincides with its diameter. A uniform magnetic field of 2T in the horizontal direction exists such that initially the axis of the coil is in the direction of the field. The coil rotates through an anlge of 90^(@) under the influence of the magnetic field. (c) What are the magnitudes of the torques on the coil in the initial and final position ? (d) What is the angular speed acquired by the coil when it has rotated by 90^(@) ? The moment of inertia of the coil is 0.1 kg m^(2)
