Describe the structure of an RNA polynucleotide chain having four different types of nucleotides.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

RNA is a single stranded polynucleotide structure composed of ribose sugar, phosphate Nitrogenous Bases and nitrogenous bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine and uracil). A nitrogenous base linked to the first carbon of pentose sugar through an N-glycosidic linkage to form a nucleoside. When a phosphate group is linked to 5'-OH of a nucleotide through phosphodiester linkage. a dng nucleotide is formed Two are linked through 3'- 5' phosphodiester linkage to form a dinucleotide More nucleotides can be joined in such a manner to form a polynucleotide chain. A polymer thus form has at one end a free phosphate moiety at 5'- end of ribose sugar which is referred to as 5'-end of polynucleotide chain. Similarly, at the other end of the polymer the ribose has a free 3'- OH group which is referred to as 3' end The backbone of the chain is formed of sugars and phosphates
