Explain what happens when a colloidal solution of gold is brought under the influence of electric current.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Colloidal solution of gold contains negatively charged gold particles, where `OH^-` ion have been adsorbed in order to stabilise the gold solution. When a colloidal solution of gold is brought under the influence of electric field then negatively charged gold particles move towards anode. Such type of migration of gold colloids towards anode under the influence of electric field is called anaphoresis or general electrolysis.
