A block of mass m moving at speed `upsilon` collides with another block of mass 2 m at rest. The lighter block comes to rest after the collision. Find the coefficient of restitution.

A

`1/2`

B

`1`

C

`1/3`

D

`1/4`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

From conservation of linear momentum, we can see that velocity of 2m will become v/2 after collision (as mass is doubled)

Now, e = (Relative velocity of separation)/(Relative velocity of approach) = (v/2)/(v) = 1/2`
