Explain aldol condensation with an example.

When aldehydes and ketones containing at least one `alpha-H` atom undergoes selfcondensation reaction in presence of dilute alkali such as `NaOH//KOH` as catalyst to form `beta-`hydroxy aldehyde called aldol `beta-` hydroxyl ketones called ketols respectively. This reaction is known as aldol condensation.
