Why are sperm and ova said to be the connecting link between two consecutive generations?

The fusion of a male and a female gametes (i.e., ovum and sperm) produced in the gonads of male and female parents produces zygote which develops into the adult of next generation. The genetic material from parents to the offspring is carried by the gametes.
