How can polyploidy be induced in flowering plants?

Polyploidy in plants can be induced experimentally by adding colchicine in the medium of dividing cells. Colchicine inhibits spindle formation during cell division but not replication of chromosomes. This causes doubling of chromosome number without their separation into daughter cells.
