What is the difference between a breed and species? Give an example for each category.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Breeds are different varieties of animals of the same species which are developed by interbreeding and selection. For example, German shepherd and Rottweiler are two different breeds of dogs of same species and Shire and Arab are different breeds of horses.
A species is a group of actually or potentially interbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups in nature. They do not produce fertile hybrids. For example, Siberian tiger and Bengal tigers are two different breeds of tigers and can interbreed to produce fertile hybrids. But lion and tiger belong to two different species and do not breed in nature.
