Rationalise the given statements and give chemical reactions : • Lead(II) chloride reacts with `Cl_(2)` to give `PbCl_(4)`. • Lead(IV) chloride is highly unstable towards heat. • Lead is known not to form an iodide, `PbI_(4)`.

Text Solution

Since, due to inert pair effect, the +4 oxidation state of lead is much less stable than +2 oxidation state, lead(IV) chloride on heating decomposes to form more stable lead(II) chloride.
`underset("Lead (IV) chloride (Less stable)")(PbCl_4) overset(Delta)to underset("Lead (II) Chloride (More stable)")(PbCl_2) + Cl_2 uarr`
