What effect does branching of an alkane ...

What effect does branching of an alkane chain has on its boiling point?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The boiling point of an alkane decreases with increase in branching. This is because the branching makes the molecule more compact and decreases its surface area. This decreases the magnitude of van der Waals. forces existing between the molecules. On account of this, boiling point decreases.
