Out of benzene, m–dinitrobenzene and toluene which will undergo nitration most easily and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Toluene. This is because `-CH_3` group is an electron releasing (electron-donating) group and activates the ring. On the other hand, `-NO_2` group is an electron-withdrawing group and deactivates the ring. This is why toluene undergoes nitration most easily.
