Explain why pure water has the maximum water potential.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Pure water has the maximumri water potential, since water molecules will always move from pure water into any solution on the other side of a partially permeable membrane. For instance, if some solute is dissolved pure water, the solution has fewer free water and the concentration of water decreases, reducing its water potentiall. Hence, all solutions have a lower water potential than pure water.
