Osmosis and Imbibition

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Osmosis is a physiological process that occurs due to osmotic pressure gradient. A semipermeable membrane involvement is essential for the process. In it. water diffuses only in liquid form and no heat is generated in the process. Whereas imbibition is a physical process that occurs due to various phenomena-diffusion, capillary force and surface tension Presence of semipermeable membrane is not essential for the process. In it, water is absorbed/imbibed in liquid as well as in vapour form and heat is generated in the process.
