Why is it essential to wash the precipitate with water before estimating it quantitatively.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electrolytes are mixed to form the precipitates. Some amount of these electrolytes remain adsorbed on the surface of the precipitates. Hence, it is essential to wash the precipitates with water to remove the sticking electrolytes or any other impurities before estimating it quantitatively. Moreover, the sticking electrolyte may cause peptization (conversion of ppt. into colloidal particles).
