Why is a solution of potassium hydroxide used to absorb carbon dioxide evolved during the estimation of carbon present in an organic compound?

`CO_2` is an acidic oxide and gets absorbed quantitatively in the solution of KOH which is a strong base. The product formed is potassium carbonate.
` 2KOH +CO_2 to K_2 CO_3 +H_2 O`
Thus, the increase in the mass of the container (usually a U-tube) containing KOH solution gives the mass of `CO_2` produced on account of the combustion of the given organic compound. This is used for calculation of percentage of C in the given compound.
