The mass of a body on the surface of the earth is 70kg. What will be its (i) mass and (ii) weight at an altitude of 100km? Radius of the earth is 6371km.

Mass = m= 70 kg
Weight on the surface of the earth `= mg = 70 xx 9.8 =686N`
The mass of the body at the altitude of 100km is also the same as that on the surface of the earth i.e., 70 kg
Weigth of the body at a height h is mg.
`h = 100 xx 10^(3) m = 10^(5) m`
Weight `= mg. = mg ( 1- (2h)/( R )) = 70 xx 9.8 ( 1- ( .2 xx 10^(5))/(6371 xx 10^(3))) = 664.46 N`
