Graphite is anisotropic with respect to ...

Graphite is anisotropic with respect to conduction of electric current. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Graphite is a hexagonal crystal, that is carbon atoms in it are arranged in layers parallel to the plane. Thus it exists in the form of layer structure. The distance between adjacent layers is `3.4Å`. Carbon atoms are arranged in different layers and each atom is covalently bonded to three of its neighbouring atom in the same layer. The electrical conductivity is more parallel to the layer whereas the electrical conductivity is less perpendicular to the layer.
