According to 10 per cent law of transfer of food energy, only 10% available food energy is stored at the next higher trophic level, the remaining 90% is lost in respiration, decomposition and heat. For example, 1000 k cal of energy is available at the producer level, 100 k cal goes to herbivores (primary consumers), 10 k cal to the primary carnivores (secondary consumers) and only 1.0 k cal to the secondary carnivores (tertiary consumers). Thus, available energy reduces at successive higher trophic levels of food chain.

In the given figure, the various trophic levels are shown in a pyramid. At which trophic level is maximum energy available ?

[A] : In a food chain , membrane of successive higher levels are fewer in number . [R] : Number of organisms at any trophic level depends upon the availability of organisms which serve as food at the lower level .

Assertion: The loss of biologically useful energy as heat with every energy transfer in a food chain is a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics. Reason: Energy does not remain trapped permanetly in any organism. It is either passed on to higher trophic level or becomes available to detritivores and decomposers after the organism dies.
