a. Write the equations for the steps involved in the `S_(N) 1` mechanism of hydrolysis of 2-bromo 2-methyl propane.

Tertiary alkyl halides, undergo `S_(N) 1` reaction.
Example: tertiary butyl bromide on hydrolysis with aqueous `NaOH` gives tertiary butyl alcohol.

Mechanism: `S_(N) 1` mechanism involves two step:
Step 1 : -(slow step): Tertiary butyl bromide ionizes slowly to give sp2 hybridized planar tertiary butyl carbocation and bromide ion.

Step 2 : (Fast step)-* The nucleophile `OH^-` from aqueous NaOH attacks planar carbocation on either side to give tertiary butyl alcohol.

The product tertiary butyl alcohol obtained is a racemic mixture.
