How will you distinguish pentane from 1-pentene ?

Explanation

Pentane and pentene could be distinguished by addition of Baeyer.s reagent (1% alcoholic `KMnO_(4)`). Pentane gives no reaction with Baeyer.s reagent. While pentene reacts with Baeyer.s reagent to form pentane-1, 2-diol and purple colour of the reagent is discharged.
