A piece of iron sinks in water, but a slip made of iron floats in water. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

An iron nail sinks in water because density of iron is more than the density of water, so the weight of the nail is more than the upthrust of water on it. Ship is also made of iron and hollow. The hollow space is filled with air. Thus its average density becomes less than that of water. The weight of water displaced by the submerged part of ship can balance the total weight of ship and it floats.
