A piece of ice is floating in a glass vessel filled with water. How will the level of water in the vessel change when the ice melts ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a piece of ice cube floats in water, then by law of floatation, weight of the ice is exactly equal to the weight of the displaced water. When the ice melts, its volume reduces, but its weight is remains same. So the weight of melted water is exactly equal to weight of the water displaced previously by the ice. So, the volume of melted water fits exactly in the position of previously displaced volume and the water level remains the same.
