The piston in the cylinder head of a locomotive has a stroke (twice the amplitude) of 1.0 m. If the piston moves with simple harmonic motion with an angular frequency of 200 rad/min, what is its maximum speed ?

Let a be the amplitude of the stroke, then
`2a=1" m or "a=0.5" m"`
Angular frequency, `omega=200" rad/min"`
`=(200)/(60)" rad/s"`
`:.` Maximum speed
`v_(max)=omega a=((200)/(60))xx0.5`
`=1.67" m/s"`
