Calculate the `I-I` distance in (Å) for given compound `H_(2)C_(2) I_(2)` if `C-I` bond length is 2.35Å. `(sin60^(@)=0.866)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
`4`

`H_(3)C=Cl_(2)` has `sp^(3)` hybridised carbon and thus `I-C-I` bond angle is `120^(@)`
`(IO)/(Cl)=sin60^(@)`

[In `triangleICO angleICO =60^(@) and angleIOC=90^(@)`]
`IO=Clsin60^(@)=2.35times0.866=2.0351 times10^(-10)`
`I-I` distance `=2.0351times2=4.07times10^(-10)=4`(approx)
