A car travelling at 60 km/h overtakes another car travelling at 42 km/h. Assuming each car to be 5.0 m long, find the time taken during the overtake and the total road distance used for the overtake.

The velocity of car which is overtaking `v_(1)=60(5)/(18)=(50)/(3) m s^(-)`
and the velocity of car ot be overtaken `v_(2)=42xx(5)/(18)=(35)/(3) m s^(-1)`
the relative velocity between them`v_(12)=v_(1)-v_(2)`
`=(50)/(3)-(35)/(3)=5 m s^(-1)`
.
The distance travelled by car `1` in this duration
becuase The taken in overtaking this distance `=(10)/(5) =2 s`
The distance travelled by car `1` in this duration
`s=(50)/(3) xx2=33.3 m`
The total distance used for overtake
`=s+5=33.3+538.5 m`.
