At `t = 0`, the positions and velocities of two particles are as shown in the figure. They are kept on a smooth surface and being mutually attracted by gravitational force. Find the position of centre of mass at `t = 2s`.
.

A

`X=5m`

B

`X=7m`

C

`X=3m`

D

`X=2m`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

As no external force is acting on the system. The velocity of centre of the mass will be constant.
`v_(CM)=(1x5-1xx3)/(1+1)=1m//s`
Displacement of the centre of mass `/_\x_(CM)=1xx2=2m`
Hence, position of the centre of mass `=5+2=7m`
